Collection Development Policy

(October 2003)

The collection development policy for the NAS collection at ESL, UCB is as

follows:

Materials are evaluated for their utility to enhance the collection by the NAS

Librarian and by recommendation from Faculty, Staff, Students and the Native

community.

Items are acquired to support the teaching curriculum and will be also be

actively collected in the areas of History; Literature; the Arts; Tribal Languages;

Biography; Autobiography; and selective Law and Legislation materials affecting

Tribal peoples in all areas (water, land rights, treaty rights, sovereignty, etc.).

However, we are not a Law Library.

Geographic focus is primarily on North America, with materials addressing

Tribal peoples in the rest of the Hemisphere being secondary.

The NAS collection will not generally focus on or emphasize general

Histories or Archaelogy/Anthropology items, although those materials may be

sought or included in the collection where appropriate.

Formats are not limited and include: monographs, serials, government

documents, archives, maps, posters, music, film, CD-ROMS, and other formats

which may not be listed here or have not yet been brought into general use or

which have gone out of general usage.

Archival collections are actively sought and will be retained. These include

personal papers and correspondence, tribal materials, art, and audio-visual

materials, and personal library and/or archival collections.
